James currently leads strategy & planning for P&C Claims Innovation at USAA where his primary responsibility is to ensure the innovation portfolio is delivering value, it is aligned for the right outcomes, and resources are used efficiently. This includes building project and portfolio roadmaps in alignment with current and future objectives, leading and motivating a diverse group of Innovators, and helping to build a strong culture of innovation across USAA.
Prior to P&C, James spent four years with USAA Labs, USAA’s enterprise innovation team. There he created a business development function which managed and grew USAA's external innovation and venture investing ecosystem with accelerators, venture capital firms, and startups. He also lead work to develop the enterprise innovation strategy at USAA, including the creation of an innovation community operating model and associated success measures, internal processes, team structures, management routines, and key performance indicators.
Before USAA, James worked in the consulting world, helping companies build and secure enterprise software solutions with an emphasis on preparing organizations for cyber-attacks. He managed large multi-year business and technology efforts within many of the Fortune 500 and with large public sector clients in solutions comprising information security programs, governance and compliance efforts involving PCI and HIPAA, mobility, e-commerce roll-outs, and business intelligence initiatives.
James hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiological Sciences from the University of Arizona (Bear Down!). He’s been married for 10 years and in his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife and three dogs, going to Crossfit, and undertaking his next major home improvement project.
